Utility Locators

Important Information

Have you noticed small, brightly colored flags or paint markings in your yard and wondered what they’re for? These markings identify underground utility lines, and they are placed there to keep you and utility workers safe. Marking underground utilities is required by state law before any digging begins.

Each color represents a different type of underground utility:

  • Red – Electric
  • Yellow – Gas, Oil, or Steam
  • Orange – Communications
  • Blue – Water
  • Green – Sewer
  • Purple – Reclaimed Water
  • Pink – Temporary Survey Markings
  • White – Proposed Construction
