Main Street Park Grand Opening

Jun 25, 2019 | News, Parks & Recreation Department

Whitestown residents will soon have a new place to gather, play, splash, walk, jog and enjoy the outdoors. The new Main Street Park will open with a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Saturday, August 10th beginning at 12 p.m. The celebration, hosted by engineering consultant Shrewsberry & Associates, will include a D.J., live band, cornhole tournament, free hot dogs, and Fundae’s Ice Cream.

Construction of the new, 11-acre, $5 million park began with a groundbreaking ceremony on September 11th, 2018. Amenities include a splash pad, playground, turf play area, basketball courts, tennis courts, youth tennis court, pickleball court, sledding hill, walking paths, community gardens, three small picnic shelters, and a large shelter house with restrooms – all within walking distance of three of Whitestown’s largest neighborhoods: Walker Farms, Harvest Park, and The Heritage, which is currently under construction.

Main Street Park, located at 4286 S. Main Street, is one of two new parks being added in Whitestown, which was recently named the fastest-growing community in the state of Indiana for the 8th year in a row by the Indiana Business Research Center at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. The second new park, Anson Acres, will add another 15 acres of greenspace at 4671 Anson Boulevard. That site will feature basketball courts, a shelter building, bike racks, cornhole lanes, and a 20-space parking lot to accommodate visitors. Anson Acres will be constructed partially using Federal grant money.

The two new parks will double the number of town-owned parks in Whitestown.

“As we grow, it’s critical that we add new green space and trails for our residents to use and enjoy.” says Town Council President, Clinton Bohm. “That means making sure that the growth of our green space parallels the growth of our population. These projects do just that, doubling our number of parks from two to four in just over a year’s time.”

“It’s our goal to focus on offering the best possible quality of life for our residents.” Town Manager Jason Lawson explains. “That’s why adding trails and sidewalks to increase our walkability and connectivity is a priority for us here in Whitestown. Adding new parks is part of that push.”

Counting the two existing parks, Panther Park and Walker Park & Trail, the Town will have a total of 43 acres of park space with the addition of Main Street Park and Anson Acres. There are two other parks in Whitestown not owned by the Town: Lions Park and Gateway Park.
