On July 23 & 24, Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department officers will take the term “to serve and protect” to a whole new level. Over a two-night period, seven different officers will take turns serving up ice cream as the ‘Most Wanted’ Scoopers at Whitestown’s own Fundae’s Ice Cream & Sweets.
A portion of all proceeds made during the fundraiser will be donated to the police department’s National Night Out fund to help pay for the annual event taking place on August 6th this year. The huge event is free to the public thanks to donations from local businesses.
“As residents, we have been bringing our own kids to National Night Out for years,” says Fundae’s Ice Cream & Sweets co-owner Donny Miller. “When we opened our ice cream shop here in Whitestown, we wanted to give back. We came up with this fundraising idea last year and it was so popular that we wanted to host it again this year.”
Last year’s ‘Most Wanted’ Scoopers event raised more than $300 for the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department’s National Night Out fund. This year, even more money will be raised, since an extra layer of friendly competition between the seven officers is being added.
“Each officer has created his or her own sundae,” Miller explains. “Customers will vote for their favorite either on Facebook or in person at the event. The winning sundae creation will be announced in August and will be the featured ‘Sundae of the Month’ for the month of August, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of that particular sundae all month long also going to the National Night Out fund.”
Last year’s event was so popular, the line was often out the door as the police officers scooped. Not only did kids stop in to be ‘served’ by police, some even brought cards of appreciation to give to the officers.
“It’s so nice to interact with the community in such a fun and positive way.” says P.S.O. Kirsten Gibbons.
