Get Gun PermitWhitestown Metropolitan Police Department

Starting July 1, 2022, you no longer need a permit to carry a handgun in Indiana. The same people prohibited from carrying a handgun under the permit system, including those with felonies, are still prohibited from carrying a handgun. Permits are still available to those who want one — such as people traveling to another state that has reciprocity with Indiana.

How to apply for a new license to carry:

  1. Complete the online application at the Indiana State Police Handgun Licensing Portal.
  2. Schedule an appointment to submit your fingerprints. Find a fingerprinting location here. (Please note: WMPD does not do fingerprinting.)
  3. Bring the fingerprint receipts and a valid Indiana ID (with current Whitestown jurisdiction address) to the Whitestown Police Department (6208 Veterans Dr.) on Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

After you complete step 1, you will have only 180 days to complete steps 2 and 3. Once all of the above steps are completed, your application will be electronically transmitted to ISP for final review. If your application is approved, your permit will be sent to you via U.S. Mail. If your application is rejected, you will be notified via U.S. Mail and will receive instructions on how to file an appeal.
