Whitestown Fire Department plans to honor civilian heroes

Dec 15, 2020 | News, Whitestown Fire Department

The Whitestown Fire Department (WFD) will honor two civilian heroes for their efforts rescuing a resident from a house fire.

Cody and Brittney Hartman were leaving a friend’s house on the evening of December 5 when they noticed heavy smoke coming from a residence in the 3700 block of Dusty Sands Road. They made access to the front door and found the resident inside. They got him out of the house and called 911.

WFD personnel arrived on scene with heavy fire showing. The fire was marked out just over an hour into the incident. Currently, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The homeowner was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition and is still hospitalized with mostly third degree burns on 30 percent of his body.

“Without the quick thinking, selfless, and heroic actions that Cody and Brittney performed that night, the outcome would have undoubtedly been much worse,” said WFD Chief Josh Westrich. “Cody and Brittney are civilian heroes that saved a man’s life.”

The couple will be honored on Saturday, December 19 at 11 a.m. at Whitestown Fire Station 271 located at 2965 South 575 East. The ceremony is not open to the public, but media is welcome to attend.
