4 water safety tips from WFD

Jul 26, 2023 | News, Whitestown Fire Department

The Whitestown Fire Department wants you and your family to stay safe at the pool.

Check out this informational video:

Tip #1: Teach your children how to swim.

Ensure every member of your family learns to swim so they at least achieve skills of water competency: able to enter the water, get a breath, stay afloat, change position, swim a distance then get out of the water safely.

Tip #2: Don’t be distracted.

It only takes a moment. A child or weak swimmer can drown in the time it takes to reply to a text or apply sunscreen.

Tip #3: Know the signs of drowning.

Recognize the signs of someone in trouble and shout for help. A swimmer needs immediate help if they:

  • Are not making forward progress in the water.
  • Are vertical in the water but unable to move or tread water.
  • Are motionless and face down in the water.

Tip #4: Know how to help someone in trouble in the water safely.

Know what to do in a water emergency – including how to help someone in trouble in the water safely, call for emergency help, and CPR.
